Calling All Bug Repellents!

Updated: Jul 27, 2022

I'm not a big fan of bugs...whether they are the good ones or the not so good ones(pests)! I'm not sure if anyone really is! LOL! As an organic gardener, I always try and solve my gardening challenges with organic based principles, protocols, or approaches. One wonderful approach to repelling our pesty friends is to plant those plants that are known as plant repellents!

Here is a short list of what I've used successfully...

BASIL: Basil is one of my favorites and a great option because it not only repels mosquitos, thrips, flies, and spiders, there are so many dishes and things you can do with it in recipes.

LEMON GRASS: Lemon grass is known to repel insects including mosquitos because it contains citronella oil.

OREGANO: Oregano is another kitchen favorite as well as a mosquito repellent!

ROSEMARY: Rosemary is great in dishes as well as a repellent for mosquitoes and cabbage moths.

PETUNIAS: Petunias are not only beautiful, but they repel various insect species including asparagus beetles, squash bugs, aphids, and leafhoppers.

ONIONS: Onions, I would say, are what I use the most in my garden. I mix them around other plants and I've had very little problems with pests! They are also known to repel spiders and spider mites! Planting them in pots around where you frequent outdoors will keep all the critters at bay.
